Project completed ahead of schedule. No budget
overruns and tailor-made.
This project consists of the transformation of a small apartment in a 19th-century building located in the historic center of Porto.
Given the small size of the space and the client's specifications to increase the usable area, the proposal is based on the design of a mezzanine above the central space, taking advantage of the high ceilings characteristic of buildings from this period.
This intermediate floor thus integrates a bedroom, an additional space open onto the living room, which is above all private and separate.
The lower floor comprises the living and dining room, which also includes the kitchen.
The remaining service spaces, such as the bathroom and storage, are concentrated in the surplus area, inside and under the bedroom.
In terms of language, the project seeks to respect the history of the building, both through the predominance of wood and the reinterpretation of some specific elements of the architecture of that period, namely the window shutters and high baseboards.
In addition, the ceiling design stands out on the mezzanine because it recalls the image of a traditional Portuguese house.
The "house within a house" is the concept behind this project and the desire to enhance the space of this apartment with the domestic comfort characteristic of a detached house.
